Cabeludo, Michael Stipe comanda a banda em versão grosseira do single de Reckoning na MTV norte-americana

Um Michael Stipe cabeludo comanda o R.E.M. na performance do single “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry)”, exibida na MTV norte-americana, em 1983. O vídeo (assista abaixo com exclusividade na Rolling Stone Brasil) integra a caixa com seis DVDs REMTV – com material de décadas de aparições na televisão, shows completos, premiações e documentários –, lançada nesta segunda, 24.

“So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)” saiu como o primeiro single do segundo disco do R.E.M., Reckoning, de 1984. Na época da apresentação, a banda já havia lançado o álbum de estreia Murmur (1983) e se expandia em paralelo à MTV nos Estados Unidos. O canal de TV surgiu em 1981 e foi ganhando em popularidade simultaneamente ao R.E.M.
Com a cabeça recheada de cachos, Stipe mostra o entusiasmo de garoto, pulando e balançando os cabelos, principalmente no fim da canção. O instrumental e os trajes de Peter Buck, Mike Mills e (o então baterista do grupo Bill Berry) são quase uma versão mais orgânica do R.E.M. que reinou no rock alternativo nos anos seguintes.

Em 24 de novembro, o R.E.M. lança uma caixa com seis DVDs, chamada REMTV, que traz material de décadas de aparições na televisão, com filmagens de performances em shows, premiações, a introdução ao Hall da Fama do Rock and Roll e programas de TV em geral, entre 1983 e 2007.

REMTV também contém os dois MTV Unplugged da banda, de 1991 e 2001 – que foram lançados em CD no começo deste ano, como Unplugged: The Complete 1991 And 2001 Sessions – e o programa Storytellers, da VH1, de 1998. Ambos contêm cenas inéditas, que não entraram nas edições da época.
A banda dedicou três discos para performances ao vivo, que datam do meio dos anos 1990 até o fim da década de 2000, incluindo três shows com entrada gratuita em Cologne (2001) e em Atenas, na Grécia (2008). As duas apresentações estarão disponíveis na íntegra na caixa, que ainda conta com mais que uma dúzia de canções não exibidas.

A caixa também inclui um documentário longa-metragem sobre a banda – R.E.M. by MTV –, que traça a evolução tanto do grupo quanto do canal de TV, juntos. REMTV já está disponível para pré-venda no site oficial da banda (a pré-venda inclui download imediato da performance do grupo para o MTV Sonic, em Milão, em 2001).
No começo de 2014, o R.E.M. lançou duas caixas que compilaram raridades desde os primeiros anos da banda, no I.R.S. Records, na década de 1980 até o resto da carreira na Warner Bros. Entre os dois lançamentos, o grupo ofereceu mais de 150 gravações raras.
